Warm greetings from The Inviting Home! The holiday season is upon us, and I hope you are finding warmth, welcome and joy in your gathering spaces. Perhaps the most favorite gathering space in my home is around the fireplace. It invites, because we always find warmth and welcome there.   I wonder if you’re finding yourself drawn to your fireplace? Perhaps you’re wanting to invoke a warm and inviting feel. I found the following collection of tips useful and hope you find inspiration in them as well:

Photo by The Inviting Home*The fireplace in any room typically stands out as a main focal point. It should compliment existing décor as it commands attention. As you decorate with holiday trimmings, use colors and style that echo the décor of your living space.Photo by The Inviting Home

*Multiple items can have a larger impact on the mantle than a single item. Consider leaning 3-5 images of a similar theme upon the mantelshelf. Make sure your framed pieces are at least 1/3 the height of the chimney. This will insure your arrangement is in scale with your fireplace. Balance and proportion are equally important here as in the rest of your living spaces!

*A mirror above a fireplace adds an open and airy feel to the room. Consider adding mercury glass hurricanes or candlesticks to the mantle – their reflective surfaces add “bright and light” to the room. Holiday greens add texture as well as a warm, fragrant and welcoming touch.

*If your mantle or fireplace lacks attention, wake it up with a burst of color by painting it a color that contrasts with your walls; it will bring immediate warmth and awareness to your focal point.

Photo by The Inviting Home*Layering items on your mantle is a unique way to highlight what you own. To avoid a cluttered look, keep a sense of continuity with your items; vary the heights and sizes of your objects; place larger pieces in back; use stands (or books) to raise select items if necessary.

*If you have a single, show-stopping piece of holiday artwork you wish to highlight, consider placing it above your mantle. If you feel the overall look is bare, add candlesticks or drape greenery to add a little more presence.

Photo by The Inviting Home*The use of natural elements such as pinecones, branch clippings, cranberries, pomegranates and greens bring instant holiday cheer to your mantle.

Warm greetings from The Inviting Home! I hope this finds you enjoying the vibrant colors and cooler air that Fall has brought. And as you transition from the outside chill, into the warmth of your home, I hope you find welcome and warmth…. in your entry way.

The entryway is the natural “introduction” to your home. It says “welcome…come in…. be at home.” It gives your guests an instant “impression” about you and your home that they will unconsciously be reinforcing throughout the rest of your gathering spaces. Your entry is a sneak peek into your style, color and décor choices. Much like an introduction to a book, your home’s entry tells your guest what to expect from the other chapters, or rooms. We automatically conduct this first impression whenever we meet a newcomer, so it makes sense that we would also do it in a home!

The entry and front hall is also a transitional space from the outdoors to the inside. While the “presence” of each entryway is homeowner specific, it should be a place of comfort, invitation, functionality and transition. The space should represent a respite from the outside world.
If you have no entry, it is easy to create one through the arrangement of furniture. Use a narrow table and place against the adjoining wall as your entry table or consider using the back of the couch to create a walkway.

  • If no table is available, use a desk, sideboard, dresser or appropriately sized bedside table.
  • In small entryways, it is best to use the same flooring as the adjoining room in order to visually expand the space.

What is the first thing you do when you enter into your home? For most, they immediately lay down their belongings and take off their shoes. If this is you, you will want to provide a place to sit and store the shoes, backpacks, purses, and keys. If you do not use your front entryway entrance, you will want to provide functionality in an alternate location.

  • Storage in your entry way piece is ideal. Consider using a basket or tray on the table-top to corral loose items.Photo by The Inviting Home
  • If your piece has shelving behind closed doors, boxes and bins work well to keep like items with like. Use any drawers to house small items.
  • A large mirror in the entry way can visually expand a small space, bring “life” onto an otherwise drab wall by bouncing light back into the room, and provides a “quick-check” spot before exiting or entering your home.
  • Personal accessories help introduce your guests to the theme of your home, as well as provide a warm and welcoming touch. For instance, a large shell on the table-top might give away a coastal theme through out the remaining rooms in your home.
  • Pleasantly scented candles are always a welcoming touch.
  • Provide a place for cast off outerwear.
  • Not only does a potted plant transition your guest from the outside to the inside of your home, it purifies the air and adds life to your space.
  • If your entry is dark and drab, consider repainting in an updated, warm tone to visually expand and brighten your space. Look for ways to improve lighting choices.
  • In addition to its functional purposes, an area rug in your entry way is also an opportunity to bring immediate warmth of color and style to your home.
  • Enjoy the following slide show featuring 29 ideas for your entry way to do it all!

If the presence of warmth and welcome are on your homes’ to-do list, your entry way is the first place to start. I hope the above tips will help you create the space that offers the invitation to “Come in.”  And, as always, at The Inviting Home, we welcome the opportunity to help you create this welcoming space that says “you’re home” to the home in which you love the way you live.

Renee

Perhaps the cool days have you delving into a project you have specifically saved for fall. It IS a good time to sand, paint, and re-create! Try this to increase your “Front Door” appeal:

Sunshine and water had worked their ways on this front door, dulling the deep red hue. A new coat of paint, a bouquet of vibrant branches, and the bounty of a fall garden brought simple, vibrant warmth back to this doorstep! And, best of all, nothing was purchased except the paint!

Warm greetings from The Inviting Home! Summer is well underway and I hope your outdoor projects are as well! I love the details, and have been noticing how outdoor gathering spaces are becoming adorned… with everything from birdhouses, flowers and fountains to pillows and lemonade. Here are a few places I have enjoyed visiting recently. They are ornamented with details that add the homeowners’ personality to the outdoor living space.

I wonder if you have begun adding your personality to your outdoor space. What speaks to you? What has meaning? Would you choose flowers and foliage? Ceramic accents? Or would a stack of books with a pitcher of iced tea beckon you outside?

The following websites are a selection of what I have enjoyed perusing of late. They offer a wide array of garden and outdoor essentials from containers, terrariums and sundials, to lighting, furniture and accents. I hope you find them inspirational in helping you define your outdoor decorating style.

www.bhg.com/prettyporches  Offering a 16 photo slide show, you will enjoy this link! It shows various porch styles, shapes, sizes, as well as examples of lighting, controlling climate, and using fabric and furniture for individual style.  Though all about porches, these ideas can easily transform any deck or patio.
www.jschatz.com  …notice these egg-shaped birdhouses and feeders!

www.shopgrounded.com … > outdoor accessories > to view birdhouses, lighting & planters!

www.campodefiori.com …this site boasts a wonderful online catalog.

www.decor-decor.com  …notice their unique pottery and planters.

www.shopterrain.com  …if you love all things Vintage, this site offers a variety of garden, containers, furniture and decorative items; as well as a wide array of “summer living” décor.

www.restorationhardware.com … offers an impressive outdoor and garden collection.

www.americancountryhomestore.com … peruse the “outdoor” section to view outdoor rugs, wicker, log and Lake Shore furniture as well as Adirondack chairs.

I hope one of these resources highlights an object that reminds you of what you already own… sitting unused and unseen on a shelf or in a cupboard. Bring it out, dust it off, and turn it into the perfect embellishment for your favorite outdoor spot. When you embellish your garden, deck, patio or porch with touches that are a true reflection of who you are… at days’ end, you will have an outdoor space that is truly you, a space that beckons you to sit down and relax! And at The Inviting Home, we would welcome the opportunity to assist you in creating a pleasing, outdoor space in which you love the way you live!

May 2011 Newsletter

Warm greetings from The Inviting Home! Summer is here, and if your neighborhood, and household, is like mine, you’ve noticed a definite shift! People are moving…. outside! And, almost every conversation in which I’m engaged, it is soon revealed that people are thinking… outside the house!  So, today, lets go outside. Lets talk about creating comfort and beauty outside the confines of your home. Lets talk about how your backyard, front-yard, porch or patio can become an inviting, welcoming retreat.

Whatever project you’re beginning to plan, whether it’s a deck, patio, or paths to meander through lush, beautiful gardens, it should reveal your style. Make it a statement of who you are and what you love; a meaningful extension of the inviting spaces within your home.
Consider these tips on designing your outdoor living spaces:
Porches:
*Any porch lends an opportunity to create a place to retreat. If yours is small, place a comfy chair in the corner, complete with pillows, an ottoman (or stepstool), and a small table tucked beside. Bring your book, refreshments and enjoy a few moments outdoors.
*Thinking of building a porch? A circular style adds an element of mystery – visitors wonder what lies around the corner!
*On a long, narrow porch, consider adding a dining area as well as a conversation area. For ease of traffic flow, set larger pieces of furniture in corners and consider straight back furniture and narrow benches.
*In your enclosed porch, consider adding a daybed to accommodate warm, summer napping!
Decks & Patios:
*Perhaps this gathering area is the #1 spot for outdoor grilling; a good grill is the foundation for outdoor cooking.
*Is an outdoor kitchen in your plans? It can be as simple as a grill or as complete as your indoor version. Stock cabinetry and countertops are widely available as an inexpensive set-up.
If your area is not plumbed for a sink, consider using hoses for your water supply and drainage. If your outdoor kitchen calls for a sink, refrigerator, dishwasher, prep area, grill and/or oven, consider your utility requirements, shelter from the elements and climate-proof materials. Check out the following link:
*Borders around a patio, lawn, or gathering area help define the space and add gentle structure.
*Consider paths: breaks in plantings and potted flowers to direct and control traffic.

*Soften this area with lush greenery.
*Place large or heavy containers on heavy-duty casters for ease of movement.
*Add birdhouses and feeders to your outdoor livingroom to attract the natural meldies of birdsong.

Gazebos:
A Gazebo is its own outdoor room. It offers a perfect spot for reading, relaxing, and dining as well as for a hot tub or spa. Consider sun exposure and access to your home and privacy when determining the location of the structure. Plenty of pillows and cushions turn this area into a cozy retreat.
Lighting:
*To enjoy outdoor spaces at night, use porch lights, task lighting, candlelight, wall-mounted down-lights, or solar accent lights to illuminate walking paths and your landscape. Your outdoor living spaces can be enjoyed even after dark!
*Consider outdoor safe floor lamps with all-weather shades. A few resources include:
*Does your space (with a roof), style, or interest call for a chandelier? It is a fun, unexpected element of glam in your outdoor living area! Look for all-weather options!
Climate Control:
*Ceiling and standing fans keep insects at bay and create air movement.
*Overhangs, umbrellas, gazebos, canopies, trees, retractable awnings, pergolas, arbors and porches all provide relief from the sun.
*Fire pits and portable heaters extend the usefulness of your outdoor living space into cooler weather.
Wherever you live, whatever the season, these additions add visual interest and comfort to your outdoor area.
Furniture, Seating & Comfort:
*It is easy to create a seamless transition between your indoor and outdoor living spaces by using furnishings of similar style and colors.
*Furnish for durability and comfort: choose from cast iron, wrought iron, wicker, wood, aluminum, or synthetic weatherproof furniture. Wicker and rocking chairs are porch classics, but they can take center stage in any seating area.

Consider these resources for weather-resistant furniture:
*Comfortable pillows and cushions beckon your visitors to sit down, relax, and savor a moment of meaningful conversation outdoors. Covering cushions in all-weather textiles ups the durability and fade-resistance factors. Choose cheery colors for instant charm. Your fabric choices will set the style – be guided by your indoor spaces! A few resources include:
*Add comfy cushions to a wooden bench for on-the-spot comfort.
*Pull an under-used coffee table out, coat with weather-resistant paint, for an immediate place to set your refreshments.
*Consider traffic flow when placing your furniture. Furniture placement will also define activity zones: dining, relaxing, grilling.
*Large floor pillows on a bamboo mat create a zen-like atmosphere! Bring out candles and river-rocks to add to the welcoming, relaxing mood.
*Add punches of color to your outdoor space with potted plants and flowers.
*For a feeling of “home” outside, consider a rug (weather resistant) to anchor your seating area, and throws(to ward off an evening chill) and pillows to make your spot a welcoming retreat.
*Throw a tablecloth over your outdoor eating table for a soft and comforting touch.
*Ceramic garden stools can stand in as an ottoman, coffee table, or extra seating.

Privacy:
*If your gathering space requires separation from a neighbor’s yard, or an unattractive architectural element, consider these options: screens, arbors, lattices, drapes, pergolas, or trellises. An abundance of foliage in your landscaping can also create a faux wall to screen unwanted views. Consider the following for outdoor drapes:
Water:
*Water is a welcoming element in an outdoor living area. Consider a pond. Enjoy the sounds of trickling water from a nearby fountain. Fill a water-tight pot with water and add floating plants and glass globes to provide movement and added color.
Wherever you are, whatever your project, I hope these ideas will inspire an outdoor destination that is welcoming and inviting: a place in which you love the way you live.
Warmly,
Renee
